Cracks

Why would anyone want to

break their mommy’s back

Mom said as I walked

with her being careful

to avoid all the cracks

on a lovely April morning

But that was back

long before

Oswald and

Vietnam and

Chernobyl

and Flight 93

When we were enjoying

 the beauty of the sunlight

on a beautiful world and I

was fiercely determined

to never step on a crack
